The regional gastronomy is based, above all, on local produce such as seafood, a wide variety of which is offered every day in the municipal market. Among the most popular among locals and visitors are sardines, anchovies and red mullet. Typical local dishes include arroz a la banda (a rice and fish dish), fried fish, skewered sardines or king prawns, zarzuela (based on fish and shellfish).
Apart from fish, another very popular dish, especially at barbecues and family gatherings, is kid goat with garlic. A favourite local dessert is Cazuela Mohina, a rich sweetmeat of Arab origin, served in very small portions, and similar to marzipan. And, of course, we mustn't forget the great variety of tropical fruits you can try in the town.
The subtropical valley of Almuñécar produces avocados, medlars, custard apples, mangos, and many more.
